Hi all Apps DBAs,
I have been in Oracle Database Administration for 4+ years but never got a chance to work on Oracle Apps. I would like to know what are the things an Apps DBA should know apart from all the normal DBA things.
Appreciate all your feedback as it is really going to help me.

App is a pain in the a**
You have to know patching because 11i needs a patch every week or smth, imagine how buggy it is
There are small patchsets and mega patchsets, to patch mega patchsets you probably need like 2~3 weeks sigh
Ah and there is no FK in 11 but there are some in 11i
I have a friend working with App and most of his time he spends on patching
I have another friend working in Oracle and he even says everyone in Oracle support hates App....
I think you get my point

Thanks Pando,
I got your point
I was wondering what are the responsiblities of apps DBAs that can not be performed by a normal DBA.
Anything else specific about apps DBA? (apart from patching)

Hi,
What Pando says it correct. I have been performing Apps DBA resp. for more than 4 years now.
Patches are most problematic things in Apps and especially when they fail and you get poor support of Oracle.
Apart from patching, it also includes System administration of Apps, developing interface APIs, Application/database cloning, Concurrent manager administration and tuning, configuring self service, workflow, alerts, ADI, ADE etc., application installation , upgrades.
I don't remember anything big than above.
I still enjoy working as Apps DBA.
Thanks,
Sam

Thank you all for the information.
One more question...
Have you guys attended any course for Oracle Applications? or is it on the job learning while being a DBA.
Sanjay

I learned most of the things on the job except I attended system administration and AOL class from Oracle.
Metalink is a good site for learners.
Thanks,
Sam

How to Configure Windows NT Mail on Oracle Alert Manager - System - Option
Hi
This is Regarding Oracle Financial Application.
In 11i - AOL, Alert Manager, there is an option to configure Windows NT Mail(New Feature) to Send and Recieve Mails (Oracle Alerts-Message).
Anybody knows, what is the configuration?
Our Company Mail Server is Window NT.
But, Our Oracle Application Server is Solaris Machine.
We want to configure the Mail settings .. while sending Oracle Alert from Oracle application, it should reach our NT Mail server.
In Unix settings Alert is working fine.
But, How to do the Windows NT Mail settings on this Application ?
I think, an Oracle Application DBA can reply to this.
Please reply on the following mail id : [email protected]
It's very urgent.
Thanks,
Sheeja.
