Hi, every Oracle Expert here~~
i am trying to install Developer 6i on my Win 2000 Server. But, after i completed my installation and tried to log on to SQL +, it showed TNS: unable to connect to destination.
I thought it must because of i didn't start Orale service on the server, so i went to control panel to turn it on. However, i still got the same problem....
can anyone tell me what i should do?
in order to run developer6i, do i have to have Oralce 8i Database Server installed on my machine?
Thank u very much~~ ^_^

Hi
I have a couple of questions
1) Are you connecting to a local database using SQL PLUS or connecting to a remote database using SQL PLUS
2) Have you Installed developer 6i in a different home directory
If you are connecting to a database make sure you have TNS Names entry of that available in this file
TNSNAMES.ora
If you not familiar with the above file you will find a GUI Net 8 configuration assistant to help you to make a entry in the above file
If you still have any doubt keep posting

Thank you so much for ur help, Santosh~
It's a single server with no any client attached to it.
I'm connecting to a Local Database.
I've already installed Developer 6i and Oracle 8i into my server.
Developer 6i: ORANT
Oracle 8i: ORANT/ORA8i
I am able to connect to the DB in Developer 6i using SQL PLUS 8.05, as well as in Oracle 8i using SQL PLUS 8.16.
However, I think something's wrong... I go to the Enterprise Manager from Start Up Menu. There are no Storage Manager.. and some other managers , and etc. in the Menu. I only see Configuration Asistant, Console and Quick Tour under Enterprise Manager Start Up Menu.
I wonder what's going on. Is this part of the differences between Oracle 8 and Oracle 8i? cuz I used to use Oracle 8, I got all the Managers under Enterprise Manager Start Up Menu.... did i do Something Wrong during my installation....
I tried to go to Enterprise Manager Console and hoping it would take me the Enterprise Manager which I am familiar with. However, it asks me to Enter a Management Server. I wonder what I should Enter as my Management Server? I'm running a stand alone server without any client attached to it. Should I Enter my Computer Name as my Management Server for Oracle? Would this bring me to the Enterprise Manager interface which I am familiar with? Or I did Something Wrong During the Installation Process?
Thank You so much for your help

When I installed Developer and Designer on my NT machine, they created a new home directory.
In order to connect to any instance without changing the Oracle Home, you must be sure that the tnsnames.ora is the same in all network/admin or net80/admin directories.
Good luck.

Hi
Dave is right have the same file in both the directories he mentioned and one more thing is in oracle 8i You have something called as Oracle DBA Studion you will find all storage manager, schema manager, instance manager etc over there.
As far as connecting to OEM you have option of logging into a standalone system in this case your system also.

Try connecting directly to your database without a management server.
If you have many databases, OMS is useful. Instead of changing the connection each time you want to look at a different database or machine, OMS uses an agent that stores the information about each instance in a repository. OEM connects to the repository instead of the database.
If you have only one or two databases, just connect directly.
Good luck.
