urgent wanna do a startup force

i have given this command on NT

svrngr>shutdown

its taking ages to shutdown

should i do a
svrmgr>startup force

i dont want to lose any data i am in no archive log mode on nt running oarcle 8.0.5 kindly advise on the repercussions of my action if i do that

force a checkpoint then shutdown abort then startup again then shutdown normal then startup again

i am not able to connect to oracle it says oracle is shutting down .can i implement your suggestion when database is shutting down and when i am unable 2 connect.

well even it´s shutting down you can cancel the shutdown process if you connect as internal

hey thanks pando i solved the problem but still want to know what exactly does this command mean startup force is it same as saying shutdown abort when my databse is not shutting down .lokin for an answer

well i have never used startup force, if the shutdown is too slow I simply do what I mentioned in previous message.
I guess startup force is something similar but instead of you executing 3 or 4 commands it does in one, I am NOT sure because I have never used it. I am pretty sure that command is explained in Oracle Documentations, I have read it somewhere before...

hi folks

i had given shutdown and oracle took an inordinately long time 2 shutdown .when i tried to connect it refused connection saying that it was shutting down .and thats when i did a startup force and i was able to to bounce back the database without losing any data.but my question is why didnt i lose data.coz i always thought

startup force=shutdown abort+startup

Oracle does instance recovery automatically and shutdown abort is an instance failure
