Performance - Indexes

Hi,

I know that more number of indexes will degrade the performance of the SQL and database. But can anyone explain me how and why, I think more index will reduce the performance of the of Updation, am i correct.

if your update statement includes a column on which there exsists an index , then apart from updating the Table segment the corresponding index segments are also updated, this might lead to total or partial restructuring of the index....hence increasing indexes might adversely affect updation.
