Have many of you used Grid Control
Hello!
Do anyone or many of you use Grid Control for enterprise-level centralized reporting/alerting/notification tool?
What do you think of FogLite Advanced?
I just wonder what other people do in the industry -- given Grid Control is a bit complex to setup/maintain.
Many thanks!!!

do we have centralized administration in Quest Fog Light? I have seen it at one of my clients place. It is good in monitoring, reporting, as well as performance recommendations. But I have no idea if it has centralized administration facility like we have in EMGC.
Thanks,

Thank you Vijay!
I know for now, Foglite does NOT provide Administration features.
Plus, it does NOT integrate with its LEO(LiteSpeed) backup software.
I am currently in the software evaluation phase between FogLite/LEO and EMGC.
Our shop has Oracle/SQLserver, mid-sized shop, and we currently use:
1. TSM file-level backup of Oracle/SQLserver to DAD domain
(no RMAN yet)
2. IPMonitor for DB up/down notification
3. Spotlight/TOAD for GUI administration/monitoring
(although DBAs still rely on backend scripts for a lot of the admin tasks.)
Our shop doesn't have but is looking at:
1. start implementing RMAN/TDPO/TSM as a solution.
2. centralized alerting/reporting/admin tool even including RMAN.
3. a balance between efficiency and cost
(with Oracle 11G, lots of the goodies are fee-based, e.g. advanced compression)
So, I just wonder what other mid-sized shops implements and some directions/experience in the industry???

well that depends what your application needs.
To cut the cost, you need to evaluate if your application(s) support Oracle Standard Edition which is very cheaper compared to Enterprise Edition which comes with many options like partitioning, RAC, etc...
If your backup strategy is only to disk then you can use RMAN which is recommended backup solution by Oracle (no additional cost required to use RMAN).
If you have few databases in your shop then you can evaluate EM DC to administer them. You can do every part of administration with EM DC including email notifications for any threshold violations (no additional cost required to use RMAN).

Our backup goes to SAN, then get moved to DAD domain.
DAD domain replicate the backup to the other site DAD domain.
There might be off-site tapes for Month-end or year end.
I guess, in ways, it is backing up to SAN.
I learned how to setup/backup/restore using RMAN to disk locally on the target host. Now am trying to get some insight on RMAN/TDPO/TSM/SAN.
Just wonder if you or anyone there have worked with RMAN/TSM?
Any reporting/backup scripts might be helpful to me too.
Again, sorry for batting around the bush. Thought by now, I should be asking very pointed question.

Never mind ...
there are hundreds of scripts available on Google. Depends on your OS download the script and tailor it for your needs ...
Thanks,
Vijay Tummala
