    Newbie:Quick route to Oracle DBA

    Hi Gurus,
I am a bit of a newbie, I am trying to cross train into Oracle Database Administration and need a relatively quick route into Oracle.

In my previous life as a Unix Sys administrator , I have installed Oracle 8i and 9i and done basics with but now i want to turn back and take on Oracle fully.

    I need someone to

    1. Point me to most user-friendly useful resources ie online tutorials, websites ,guides etc that helps you understand thoroughly how oracle works from scratch .

2.Which areas of Oracle can be practiced at home on a server or laptop eg backup and recovery?

3.Tell me which areas of Oracle i need to master quickly to be a good DBA for

I need to know which areas in Database administration are a vital area to know thoroughly to be immediately employable for example say RAC or RMAN etc or whatever .. in todays tough job market in the UK

4.Give tips on how to get into oracle ie as a contractor or permie

    5. Any other extremely useful straight to the point tips .

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately there is not such a thing - at least on my knowledge - as a quick route.

    My suggestion would be...

1- Install a home lab a.k.a. install Oracle in any computer available to you.
2- Rely on Oracle documentation. It's free! http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.all_books
3- Ask your boss to allow you to do more Oracle related work.
4- Listen to your senior DBAs. The less you talk and the most you listen the better.
5- Check forums like this one and try to figure out the answers by yourself.

    Hope this helps.
