    Traditional dba or Application dba

    DBAs,

If you got a career chance to choose one of them. Which one do you want t o be?

Some dba friends told me that being a traditional Oracle dba is a dead end.
The application dba who knows e-business suite has more marketing value and brighter career future.

    How do you think?

    Hi.

Take one look at the job market and you will see that applicatons DBAs are getting paid much more money. The problem here is getting into that sector. The people I've come across have been lucky enough to work fo a company using the kit and gradually learned. I've not met anyone who's been on a course and got a job doing it.

People often say that it's almost impossible to get a DBA position without experience. I would say it's very difficult for an accomplished DBA to get an applications DBA position without experience in Oracle applications.

It's a good target, but you have to overcome two obstacles (DBA and applications knowledge), rather than one as a regular DBA.

Remember, a large proportion of both jobs is the same, the DBA work.

    Cheers

Tim. With the different applications around where would one start?
I've not met anyone who's been on a course and got a job doing it.
Ah!, the 64 thousand dollar question? It's been my experience that one would have to be on the inside to move up. So, if your already in, a third of the battle is whipped. Like you said, if your already an accomplished DBA, better than another third is whipped. All that is left is learning the applications ones comapny uses.

Sigh.....those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end.
I too remember when this place was coo.

    Thanks for the input.

Currently, our company will implement the Oracle e-business suite.
Got a chance to shift to that field if I want.
