    weekend database and server shutdown

    Hi,

    DB Ora 8i/ora9i/10g on AIX
    Apps on windows 2000 server

Our database and apps runs or are being used only during weekdays.
We do full backup every fridays.

My question is, Is it ok to shutdown the servers during weekends?
Some said that its better to leave the server running 24hrs than do
    frequent shutdowns, Is this true?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi

Yes its better to leave the server like that. The simple reason is your SGA which is warmed up if you recycle it oevr weekends the SGA has to be warmed up aagin with sql statements parse plans etc..

so if you dont have a strong valid reason dont do this.

    regards

    Thanks,

But if performance is not an issue, and hardware life expectancy is.
Will our servers last longer if i make them rest during weekends?

    Thanks

Hi don't know about the other guys, but I tend to find most problems occur during reboots, not before or after.

It's getting a "rest" if people aren't using it

You will most likely exhaust the capacity of your systems before you wear them out. Why worry about it?

I would look into re-booting the windoze box, I have yet to meet a windoze box that does not get weird after being up for more that (48 hours) some time.

We re-boot all Unix boxes here weekly, why? I have no idea.

I just e-mailed the Unix admins out of pure curiosity, now I have to know why this is the policy here.

Electronic components are happiest in a constant state, i.e, ON

Turning off/on the servers increases the risk of component failure during state change.

Leave 'em on. Unless of course, it's your turn on the treadmill =]

There was a an oracle bug at one time a few years back, that related to how long the server had been up - number of clock ticks since king tut built his first piramid or something.
We had an aix machine that was up for almost 3 years. The concern was that the platters wouldn't start spinning again when it was finally rebooted! Came up fine.

Haven't heard from them yet, probably took the day off for a long weekend.
