    Since you did not mention the OS, I would take the liberty to give you a more easier way to find on Unix (Solaris )systems

    Navigate to the $ORACLE_HOME/bin

    file oracle

    oracle: ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped

    Hope this would better serve your purpose.

    i got this information from http://www.stormloader.com/yonghuang/computer/x$table.html

    Your right in some os it's other way,
    in aix & linux "where indx = 2;" for 64 bit
    and in hp,sun and windows it's "where indx=1" for 64 bit.
    (any body thinks otherway????)
