Making sense out of a statspack report?

    Windoze 2000
    Oracle 9i

Problem; I log in this morning and notice both CPU’s are maxed out, stays that way most of the time.

Well, I must first apologize for posting a legitimate question, I know you have all grown accustomed to my typical nonsense and meanderings.

Anyhow, I installed statspack today on one of our prod DB’s today and created the report, which…shall we say…..is lengthy, to be mildly understated.

So, given the OS and the problem, what should I be focusing on?
Any links to statsreports_for_dummies out there?

I have already piped one of the offending SQL’s (Top 10 by CPU) through Lecco
and sent the reports to applications, including the re-writes for their bad code.

    Suggestions?

There's a book out there that gives good advice but I can't remember the name of the thing (it's in my household goods which are still being shiped). You could also go and register at http://www.oraperf.com/ and they'll analyze your reports for free. It's kind of neat. You can also go and download this GUI that will interface with the database and read the reports and put them into spiffy spread sheets. http://www.geocities.com/alexdabr/sppro.html.
    Oracle it's not just a database it's a lifestyle!

    Thanks guys!

I ran the spreport but it is really long, sometimes too much info can be counter-productive. I may check out that website, but I do not want to break any company rules either.

The most important part of the statspack report is the first few pages. Most of the other stuff just supports findings in the first few pages...

I took the pragmatic approach and ignored
    - anything I didn't understand
    - anything that looked excessively tedious

I came to the same conclusion as Jeff.

Large quantities of alcohol were mentioned in a tuning white-paper I once read. I think I wrote it.
