general oracle 9i
hi... i realised somethings recently... companies are upgrading to oracle 9i because they wanted to keep in touch with the technology. but alas, after upgrading to all these latest, proven technologies.... , they didnt tap on the power of these stuff, example oracle 9i
i hoped that i am right in the below in regards of oracle 9
1) different categories of data block size
2) parameter changes can be changed and effective without database restart
3) better management of rollback segments other than offline/online
4) locally managed tablespace
5) extents overflow issues?
the above points are brougth up during a discussion with an oracle dba...
we were discussing about the upgrading of new technology and yet not harness their power...

9i has a load of feature - read the ne feature doc if you want a complete list.
Also people upgrade because Oracle was going to withdraw support for 8i. (one reason)

If you are still on 8i, it may make sense to directly go to 10g. 9i is already in its terminal release and no sooner you upgrade to 9i, you may be looking down the barrel of 10g.

wouldnt do that unless 10g is proven stable, never use the first version release!

In fact, terminal releases are my favourite.

also, oracle 9i has this undo tablespace which we can do away with teh roll back segments?
this undo feature is to combat the ora-1555 snapshot error?

I don't think so ... I think that UNDO is just more efficient, and easier to manage. The 1555 error is a result of the consistency model that Oracle uses, and doesn't neccessarily go away withUNDO, it's just happens to be easier to configure it to avoid the error.

nothing like that.. U can use "undo_retention_ parameter to minimize "ora-1555" error just like U give initial extent=next extent and minextents=20 for conventional rollback segments..
it's upto U to use the features to avoid "ora-1555"

oracle 9i has some auto parameters whereby they can increase on their own, like this workarea_size_policy = AUTO in the area of PGA?
isnt that useful then? but then on the other hand, the unknown of how much it will be used like maxextents=unlimited?
