Deletion of ORACLE_HOME before installing 9i?

    Hello,

I am about to install Oracle 9i onto a windows 2000 server with an existing installation of Oracle 8.1.7. I would like to be able to use both versions of Oracle after 9i has gone in.

I am bit puzzled by one of the instructions in the install doc which instructs me to delete the ORACLE_HOME environment variable if it exists, it does exist and points to the 8i home. My question is do I need to do this and if I do won't it cause me problems with my 8i version?

    Many Thanks,

    Simon

You don't need to remove your 8i home, simply install the 9i database into a new ORACLE_HOME

    Hi,

So if oracle 8i is in D:\oracle\ora81 and I install 9i into
D:\oracle\ora92 what happens to the operating system registry variable ORACLE_HOME which currently points to the 8i version.

I assumed this is what I was being asked to delete?

    Many Thanks.....

Are you refering to the ORACLE_HOME environment variable or the ORACLE registry settings.

When you run the installer you can change the change the ORACLE_HOME to a new value for the 9i install.

    Hi,

This is the exact quote i am looking at :-

"Delete the ORACLE_HOME environment variable if it exists. Refer to your Microsoft online help for more information about deleting environment variables.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Note:
The ORACLE_HOME environment variable is automatically set in the registry. Manually setting this variable prevents installation.

    "

    cheers,

Stop worrying about this environment variable as it is not going to horm u while installing your 9i.Only thing u need to take care is install your 9i in new oraclehome.Say your 8.1.7 is in orahome1 then Select orahome2 for 9i.

Your registry 'default' Oracle Home will, of course, now be your Ora9 one. So when running Ora8 you might have to reset it to the Ora8 one. Particularly on client machines which might get 'confused' over which tnsnames.ora file to use etc.
