    RAID1 vs RAID5

    Hi experts,

Which one should I suggest between RAID1 and RAID5 to my manager for 24*7 production database box? And why?

    Regards

What is the nature of your application? OLTP or DSS ? Based on this you have to decide.

For high writes use RAID 0+1
For high reads use RAID 5

    Thumbs up

Hi as ggnanaraj mentioned what r u looking for

    More reliability or better performance.

    better performance ----Raid1

    Better Reliability-----Raid5

But u need a both.so i suggest u use raid 5 with cache controllers to enhance performance(If your budget permits).

    Cheers

It depends on your application. Software based RAID 5 is worthless for high intensity write applications. Hardware RAID 1+0 or 0+1 is great for reads, writes, and redundancy, but is expensive. Software based RAID 1 (mirroring) is OK for reads, writes, and redundancy, but you only have one spindle working for you during writes. Hardware based RAID 5 is OK for high intensity read applications but still sucks for writes. In addition, the performance you achieve with a RAID unit will depend on how many controllers you have, how many SCSI busses are available, what your transfer speed is, and how much cache you have available.
