SPARK v/s INTEL
Hi,
I what way a Spark machine is better than Intel ?
I know that sun spark is 100 times better than intel.
But, i was supposed to convince a customer; but couldn't give a solid explaination or reason why he should go for spark.
The requirement is to run oracle8i and around 100 users connecting every day and a growth rate of 50 mb data everyday.
Could anybody give me some effective points abt the advantages of spark machine over Intel.

The difference is that of Peanuts as compared to Almonds. The similarity is both are nuts.

Why do you believe that sparc is so much superior to Intel, out of interest? You seem to be very solid on that point, but if you can't justify it to a customer then it might be time to re-appraise the issue.
Certainly Solaris is a very solid O/S, but so is HP, and Linux is good also. Don't risk harming your credibility by fighting a battle on unsure ground, is my advice.

Sparc: More Reliable, Stable, it will run Years with out reboot the server.
Thanks.

Imho, Unless Sun is able to lower its tco, total cost of ownership, I see it continuing to fall behind. I haven't seen the really high end servers but the Sun workgroup servers that I do work on are not any faster than AIX. I think that other vendors are offering more bang for the buck than Sun. While I like Sun servers if I had to make a recommendation to a customer on what to buy it wouldn't be Sun. I would look at AIX, Intel or even HP before I would look at Sun. We have an AIX server as a test server and the performance is excellent.
Unless you are selling a large database, or one where downtime can't happen at all you should to look at Intel. I think that Dell has a preconfigured cluster package that they sell. It is easy to setup and maintain and has a lot of bang for the buck.

Hi,
the same on Linux-Intel/SUSE stable even more then sun!

I think one of the major points that with ultra-sparc-chips sun is easy-going with 64Bit but (still) not Intel

As per my system administrator . HP is is more stable , and more reliable at the same time it is 4 times more expensive than Sparc . if the database is not mission critical then go for Sun servers .

"If it's not mission critical, use sun servers"? Bit contravertial, isn't it?

I'm also interested why you say not to use Sun for mission critical systems, we use Sun for all our mission critical systems and have found it extremely reliable.
