i am new to rman.what are the adv using through oem or from command line.
if i use command line to back up database is there a way to automate

You can write shell scripts to automate rman commands. Using with oem gives you an added advantage that you don't have to write any shell scripts but run/schedule rman commands thru oem and get notification via email if you have setup notification.
