9i 's Automatic Segment Space Management

Im just curious what people think of this new feature. At first glance I cant see anything fancy that will actually improve performance. It will definatly take away the maintenance aspect but as for performance enhancing I dont know.

Has any done benchmarks on this?

I haven't actually perform any banchmarks on this this feature, however I can immediately see many fancy things as regarding to performance. For one, you can forget freelist latch contention. And your blocks will be much more tightly packed using this feture if there is lot of delete/update/insert activity, which in turn will reduce I/O.

Take away maintainance aspect? What maintainance aspect would that be? You tipicaly set PCTUSED, FREELISTS, and FREELISTS GROUPS storage parameters only once in the lifetime of a segment, so I don't see it as a particular maintainance burden.
