    Hi Everyone,
By tuning queries you can sometimes get performance boosts where queries that take 4 days can run in 1-2 minutes for really unperformant queries. Which is staggering.

Now, by tuning the server, we've managed to get a 10% boost (i.e. it takes 10% less time to run a process). What would be the maximum boost we could expect?

    Thanks!

The maximum performance boost you can get by tuning the server is 6000%. ???

=) I imagine the 6000% is possible exaggerated. But if it's possible to improve performance over even a 100% It's worth spending time on it.

How can I learn more about improving the server performance. I have the book Oracle Performance Tuning from Oracle Press. We've changed a few of parameters and got the 10% boost.

What can I look at that gives large boosts.

oh, but the typical performance increase is less than 10% in system that is close to "tuned".

    Server Tuning performance

Go back to your O/S manufacturer and search for white papers on server tuning for Oracle. Most of the major O/S guys perform this type of research and put out white papers talking about what they did. You can get alot of good information this way.

Oracle commonly quote that 80% of performance improvements come from application tuning, not server tuning.

As marist89 said, the nearer your current system is to being well tuned, the less results you're gonna see.

Why not have a look at the YAPP method:
