    All,

on my unix server I've got 2 db's installed, one on 8i and one on 9i.
    I've got 2 listeners for this (listener8i and listener9i), and I have a listener.ora for both (the oracle-home changes when I login with .profile8i or .profile9i.
When I've got one listener started, the other one won't start (error says that there's allready another listener started.
    I've changed the ports (8i on 1526, 9i on 1521), so I don't understand why they can't run together.
Does anyone have a solution for this?

    Thx,

    Rik

I might be wrong but I think the listener name also has to be unique, just call the listeners someting different LISTENER8 and LISTENER9 for example.

    Hi,

I've already given them 2 different names (listener8i and listener9i), and afterwards CVISIONLSNR and LVISIONLSNR (because maybe listener8i and 9i are to much look-a-likes).

    Thx,

    Rik

You only need one as 9i/8i listeners are forward/backward compatible. You would also have to assign 1526 as a port in /etc/services - changing the listener.ora file alone isn't enough.

UNIX - you have to define the port in /etc/services

listener 1521/tcp # Oracle Net listener

Page 4-21, Install Guide for 9.2.0.1 UNIX - Configuring Oracle Net Services

Log in as root and reserve a port for the Oracle Net listener by making the following entry in the /etc/services file of each Oracle Net Services node on the network:

    listener_name 1521/tcp #Oracle Net listener

In the preceding command, 1521 is the default port number. If you choose a different port when you configured the Oracle Net listener, specify that port in the /etc/services file.

    hi,

Does it improve performance when you have
    more than one listener?

Listener has nothing to do with your selects, delets, upades etc. It is needed only when you log in to the database. After that you can shut it down, you don't need it any more (well, of course, other users that will be trying to connect to the database will probably be upset if you realy shut the listener down ), so it can have absolutly no influence on the responce time of the database.
