about backup strategy

hi,all

oracle8.1.7
os: aix 4.3
sap

about the strategy, now i only a whole online backup everyday in 3581. I want to make some other additional backups. the backup circle is 2 weeks now.

1. do an offline backup per month.
2. do an online backup per month.

what are the advantage 1 than 2?
what's your advice about the additional backups.

Hi,
To perform a offline backup or cold backup you need to shutdown the database,so if your application or business recommends to shut down your database you can once in a month take a cold backup of the database.
It is better to take online backup or hot backup of database everyday.You can implement RMAN so that it can take increment backup of the database on daily basis.Online backups allow you to take backups of your database without shutting it down.
Apart from this backups you can also take export or logical backup of the database on daily basis in order to recover a dropped table instead of performing incomplete recovery.

it is not permit to shotdown the db, so as you say, the additional backup is export and import.

to do export, is only for revoring from drop tables? is there any other advantages?

do i need export all the database? it is 40G. what is the your export plan?

if i want to save the history data every month. the online whole backup can take place of offline backup.

U need to read the backup and recovery doccumentation .
U need to look at advantage /disadvantage of cold backup
U need to look at advantage / disadvantage of hot backup
also how export back up is useful.

suppose i do export of user every day. if now a user drop a table, i will import the schema exported yesterday. so i don't need to recover the whole database.

but why DBAs like to export as an additional backup to the whole online backup everyday? As you say, it seems no meaning.
