I have got a db running on 8.0.4 and I'm creating a new db on a seperate box and installing 8.1.7. I want to know the best way I can take a copy of the db and all the users etc... from one box to another.

    Thanks

    1. Take a clean shutdown and copy all datafiles, parameter files and controlfiles to the second database.

    2. Export / Import full database.

in your case better to take export using 8.1.7 export utility and import full database.

That's probably the best solution. But DBAMAN, do you know what needs to be done between the export and the import and after the import?

Should I be aware of anything between the import and export?? If i copy all the datafiles should I need to do an import and export??

Sorry for my ignorance but its all new to me.

You mean between the export and the import? You first export, then import, not vice versa.

You cannot just copy the datafiles. It requires recreation of the CF, etc.

Has anyone used DBNEWID in 9.2?

Create the users(s) in NEW_DB, use the metadata from OLD_DB to create the tables, indexes, triggers, views, sequences, etc. Now, you have a copy of the OLD_DB without the data. Next you populate the data. Disable all triggers and constraints in the NEW_DB, truncate all tables (in case there is data in some of them), import only the data from the dump/export file. Enable the constraints (first the PKs, then the rest), enable the triggers, recompile the code, analyze the DB if necessary. There might be some additional stuff if OLD_DB is not exactly the same as NEW_DB.

This is the way I will do it.

    1. Copy all datafiles to the target server.
    2. startup database on 8.1.7.
    3. run @?/rdbms/admin/u0800040.sql
    4. check if there is any invalid objects. Compile them if there is any.
    5. (Optional)You might need to run catalog and catproc.

Susan, thus you will upgrade the 8.0.4 database to 8.1.7. DBAMAN wants to transfer the physical/logical structure of the database too.

She said se would "1. Copy all datafiles to the target server." She can hardly not "transfer physical/logical structure of the database too" that way, no?
