    8.1.7.0.0 should be fine on W2K. Several critical bugs have been discovered in that version and I too ( I can't believe I agree with wannabe ) think you should upgrade to at least 8.1.7.2. It isn't mandatory, but the first time you file a TAR, Oracle will tell you to upgrade to the latest version before they look at it.

    Run the patch: tar -xvf tar_file_name

    Disabling system triggers.

    In the init.ora add:

    _system_trig_enabled=false

    turn event on:

    ALTER SESSION SET EVENTS '10520 TRACE NAME CONTEXT FOREVER, LEVEL 10';

    Run

    ?/rdbms/admin/catalog.sql
    ?/rdbms/admin/catproc.sql

    ALTER SESSION SET EVENTS '10520 TRACE NAME CONTEXT OFF';

    Enable system triggers.

    Delete from ini.ora:

    _system_trig_enabled=false

    If i haven't created any database yet, only software is installed, does running the patch alone without doing other steps work ??
