    Question Date Format

How to sort a DATE field of a database as a chronological date. When I sort my database with the DATE field, the command considers the content of the DATE field as a text!!!!!
    Additional INFO:-
The column of my database consists of date of type 'Date/Month/4-digit year' e.g. '13/12/2001' but the field format is VARCHAR2(10) instead of DATE. Is their any possibility of sorting the database chronologically by that column as presently, the sorting results in sorting the database as text column?

if your column's type is date, ordering by this column will order chronogically ...
what is the datatype you use ???
and if it's a date, what is the display format you use ??
