    Angry

    Hi All DBA's ,

I have one query on networking.
the setup is like i have oracle 8.0.5 on windows NT
server. It is loaded into D:\OraNT directory.
The listener is configured on 1521 port.

Now i need to install 817.
I do not want to upgrade from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7 but i
need to install Oracle 8.1.7 in
    completely new directory.
As Oracle 8.0.5 is reqd and is being used by some
    users.

New Oracle 817 is loaded into new directory like
    D:\Oracle817

    My queries are :

    1. Does the tnsnames.ora file appear diff in these 2
    versions like
in 805 is it like Tnsnames.ora and in Oracle 817 is
    like tnsnames.ora
Will this case sensitivity will cause any problem?
What if i rename Tnsnames.ora to TNSNAMES.ORA of
    any of the versions,
will it give any problem ?

    3. Once i install oracle 817 and it is completed, and
    during configuration of listener
i have to give new port like 1527 and another
    listener name as LISTENER1 right?
    How is this configuration done?

    4. If i need to access 817 and 805 from local machine,
so i will load 817 client version and in tnsnames
    configure both the databases entries
with ports like 1521 and 1527.

    Do help me.

    Solution

Dear Rohit, 4th May 2001 13:59 hrs chennai

Like as you have said i have installed 2 versions of oracle
    on same machine and worked.

The soutions for your problems goes on like this.

1)You dont need to change the names of TNSNAMES.ORA since for both the oracle the home dir in the network/admin/tnsnames.ora it will identify respectively. If you rename i think it will return error.Oracle will take care to identify them in the respective home directories location.

3)Edit the TNSNAMES.ORA for which you want to change the port number in the respective home directory to make it as 1527.

    4)
Thats right .you are correct .

In 8.1.5 and above its called service_name whereas in 8.0.5 its called sid...?
    ===================
Refer this link at the bottom to work in both the DB simultaneously from the server side also.

i think when your on NT Tnsnames.ora and tnsnames.ora are same coz windows is insensitive (case insensitive i mean :-)

i dont think so you need to cahnge the port no .
(i think i am right here)

    regards

    You have to change

    Hi, 4th May 2001 16:51 hrs chennai

You have to change since he has configured the
LISTNER1 with port id as 1527.

You have to change since he has configured the
LISTNER1 with port id as 1527.

Its not due to insensitive reason its in a seperate Oracle Home path.

There is a much simpler way to do this. You should create one listener in the 8.1.7 version and let it serve both the 8.1.7 and the 8.0.5 database. That way, you only need to worry about 1 listener.ora file. You can then access the 805 and 817 databases from EITHER the 805 or 817 clients.

Dear Marist, 4th May 2001 19:51 hrs chennai

I do accept your solution as good one .This is how my system i am working on.

But now Rohitsn has to tell us why he is opting the other way round.?
