Oem

HI all,

I have my database running and we have been using third party tools to manage our database. I heard alot of good things about OEM and now I am trying to use it. When I first click on the OEM, it launch the application and I got the below error:

failed to parse tnsnames.ora file
error:100 -- NLNV-NLNV string format error.

as I said earlier, I was be able to connect fine to the database using SQL plus and third party tools.

Anyone encounter this problem and have any advises???

What component of OEM your trying to use ?
What kinda names resolution you are using ? Local names/Names server ?

Itseems to me your tnsnames.ora is not in right shape for the database you are trying to connect. Check your tnsnames.ora file first and fix it.

If you are able to connect to database see what kinda resolution you are using and takeit from there.

When you try to "navigator-->add database to tree" can you tell OEM to look at your tnsnames file. It will tell you the dir it should be in, from there you can add and DB you want.

yes, I try to add the database to tree, how can you tell OEM to look at my tnsnames. ora file ??? and I didn't see the directory it suppose to be in at all???

That tells me you might have two oracle clients on you have on your PC. Give a try on searching tnsnames.ora from your terminal and see howmany it turns up

Oracle server was isntalled on this machine too. when I picked the option Add selected databases from your local tnsnames file located in $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin\tnsnames.ora, what am I suppose to do from here ???? click ok ??? and then it's going away.

It shouldn't go away. It should read all the tns entries in your tnsnames.ora so that you can pick which entry you want to connect. Seems you don't have successful installation of all the components of OEM at server level.

If you are trying on the server make sure all the OEM components have been installed properly. Inorder to use some of the basic components(DBA Studio etc) you do not need OEM to be installed on Server itself. It can be from your own Terminal where you have Oracle Client installed, You have to pick administrative options install at the time of client install.

If you want to use all the Componenets oF OEM you have to install OEM as seperate database with repository and make this OEM repository talks to enterprise wide databases and collect data from Intelligent Agents running at all database nodes.

Note:Check out your $OH/network/admin/tnsnames.ora has an entry for database you are trying to connect thru OEM or its just empty file.

I am unclear about how to install and configure OEM, could someone please give me the link of how to install and configure OEM ???

get list of books
and click on OEM a whole bunch of manual is there.(the config guide would be the one u want)

Hi mike,
Oem is a good tool for managing oracle databases.
u can use it in client/server and also through the management server.
U may not be able to use some features in the client/server mode.

He is spot on.I strongly belive that there is a conflict in the network components of two versions of oracle software in the same pc.

It is always preferred to install oem in a machine other than the database server
Tell me what do u expect from the oem
if it is storage,security,instance,schema management then u need not require management server.just the oem client should do.
if u need the tuning stuff then u need the management server
