Cant create Database using dbassist

While running dbassist to create a database I was getting an error:
ORA-03114:cant connect to ORACLE?????

So I started lsnrctl and started a listener,
and I tried running dbassist again,
and this time I got the error:
ORA-03113:end-of-file on communication channel.

Any ideas whats going on? and how can I resolve this?
How else can I create a database?

you have to set correctly the parameter for sheared segments and semaphories in your etc/system.
They probably are too small or they were not setted.
Try it.
It should solve your problem.

etc/system for Sun Solaris
stand/system for HP-UX in etc is not present

What should I set them to?

I made the changes to shmparam.h and the sem.h as instructed in the pre-installation guide.
And then recompiled the kernel as told.
Is that different than what youre saying?

I think you have some kind of environment problem. Make certain your $ORACLE_HOME
variable is set correctly, that nothing else is resetting it (duplicate line in .profile,
a .kshrc file, etc). Make certain that $PATH contains $ORACLE_HOME/bin.
Do you have $ORACLE_SID set to what the instance name you are creating.

Can you open another xterm or telnet session and see if the Oracle background
processes are running?

OK,
I opened up a new Xterm session and did a
echo $ORACLE_HOME
and it gives me a blank line.
but on the term where I run dbassist, it gives me the correct path.
If I go to the .bash_login file, and the path settings there are correct.

Ive set ORACLE_SID=DNC
thats what I plan to call the database ONCE its created.

Is that the problem?

If you had this problem trying to create the database after Oracle installation probably the problem is the settings I told you are not correctly.
In the instllation guide there is a section related to the pre-installation tasks where you can find what I tried to explain above.
However if you set those parameters into tthe file system and then rebbot your machine there is no matter to modify you did and to recompile the kernel.
Remember you must be root to edit the file etc/system

And how do I check for other ORacle processes running on the background?
I did a ps and all it showed me were the 2 processes, one for the sh and the other ps
Is that where Im supposed to see Oracle processes too?

You spoke abot a .bash_login file. You on a LINUX platform not on a UNIX (HP or SUN)!!!!

ok, I did that, logged in as user ORACLE
i dont see any oracle processes running.
One thing though,
I make changes to the .bash_profile, but when I do a reboot, I dont see the changes take effect.
For instance, I set
ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/...
export ORACLE_HOME

but then when I reboot and do an echo $ORACLE_HOME
I see nothing.
SO its obviously not reading the profile file from the users home directory, but somewhere else,
any ideas???

there is not a big difference fore the concepts but for the location of the file you have to modify.
However those are the parameters you must have stted before installin Oracle:

SHMMIN 1
SHMMNI 100
SHMSEG 10
SEMMNS 200
SEMMNI 70
SEMMSL 100

The values are indicative!!! Those is what i can suggest you.
If you have not setted those paramenters you won't ever be able to build and run an instance.

There is a system-wide .profile, which is usually in /etc,
but I'm not so certain in Linux. But it really doesn't matter,
because the system-wide .profile doesn't get executed
*after* yours.

Here's a suggestion (and this is in Korn shell syntax, similar
but not exactly the same as Bash). Manually set your
environment, either in a set-env script or at the command
line:
export ORACLE_HOME=/whatever/full/path/is
export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:.:
export ORACLE_SID=

Before you run the installer echo these values:
env | grep ORACLE
to make sure they're set.

In the *same* window (that is important), now run the installer.

The other option is to build the database yourself. The wizard is
notorious for this kind of problem. There are scripts out there
that will build the db, you'll have to edit them a bit. There's a
good set of scripts on the O'Reilly Oracle Database Admin book.
I might have one floating around here, as well. I'll look.

Even if you try to build the instance manually you'll get the same error because Oracle does Know how many resources you machine has!!
Settigs I've got are not alternative but REQUIRED before running an Oracle installation.
However I forgot a parameter above and it is the follow:

SHMMAX

However look for Linux installation guide in the section linux environment.

OK Ive made the settings to the PATH as told.
Do I need to declare ORACLE_SID too before creating the database?
I also made the changes to the shmmax and all those variables.
Now do I need to run the Installer or the dbassist program?

First of all if you have changed the kernel parameters you must reboot your machine.
Then if your oracle installation was successfull and you had problems only trying to create the database you must only rerun the dbassist.
Now you should create your database successfully.

set ORACLE_SID before create database to associate an instance to the database that is going to be created. ORACLE_SID is an instance identifier.

Run the dbassist.

Installer wont create a database, installer installs the software.

So rebooted and everything went fine.
Now when I run dbassist, and complete all the settings, and click on install,
it starts the install but midway gives me the error message:
ORA-03113:end-of-file on communication channel
what is that? and is that happeneing?

Well thi is another kind of problem.
Now your settings are ok to build a database but there is something wrong with Net8 installation or configuration.
Check Net8 installation now.

Now I don't remember well the dbassist interface but it seems to remember that after specifing your settings you shold click on create and not on install!
You have nothing else to install when you create you database in Oracle installation was successfully.
But maybe I do not remeber well the dbassist interface.

Well.If you have no instance working no Oracle process mut be running.
Look for Oracle processes running and then kill them.
Then retry to run the dbassist.

Well I did as you said, and Im still getting this error:

dont click create in dbassist, instead generate the scripts and run scripts from svrmgrl, you will see the errors more clearly. Where and when the process fails

Ok, heres the next problem,
when I run svrmgrl,
I do a connect internal,
then I cant do a startup because obviously there is no database to connect to.
So how do I run the script on svrmgrl?

startup nomount pfile=/../../../init.ora

now this may sound really odd,
but when I do a connect internal on svrmgrl,
it asks me for a password?????

There must be a password file. Look in ORACLE_HOME/dbs for a file called orapwd*.

THe problem is dbassist should create a initSID.ora file,
which it is not, which does not let me do anything beyond that.
So any clues on why isnt the initSID.ora file being created?

edit initSID.ORA, change REMOTE_PASSWORD_FILE to NONE

If you are going to create your database through server manager, as has been suggested because dbassist isn't working, you'll need to create your init.ora yourself.

or init.ora
because init.ora is there.
but initSID.ora isnt.
So how do I edit the initSID.ora to change the remote password when there is no initSID.ora?

I did a reboot, and did a connect internal on svrmgrl and i got connected.
Now I need to create my own initSID.ora,
where can I get a sample initSID.ora file from to make the changes?
