If you're working freelance how do you get MetaLink access at a reasonable price? (Just curious.)Quote:

As being a past "freelancer" working for companies, everyone who runs Oracle has a CSI number. That's the first thing I ask for. Like when I got to my present assignment. No one knew wtf I was talking about so after some searching and getting license numbers I got the developers and myself setup on Metalink.
It's not hard to do and even if you are a temporary "freelance" consultant to a company, I'm sure the Metalink admin for the company would be glad to setup an account for you.
All these people who post on here about not having a Metalink account or can't get one I say BUNK!
Hi OracleDoc,
What do/did you do between contracts?
Take/Took a vacation. What else would I do? lol :DQuote:

But, I get what you're saying. I've found that 9 times out of 10 previous employers forget to take you off the list anyway. Also, you can have several csi numbers associated with your profile.
Come on Dapi you know as well as I do that the only time people are going to ask questions here is if they've run into a problem which means they're working on a database, which means they have to have a license.
You can buy metalink access for not very much I think.
Also with the licensing. If you are a freelancer then you are using your Oracle products at home for commercial gain so you must have a license? therefore you get a CSI ..... maybe
Purely educational, M'Lord.Quote:

So what are you trying to say Dapi that you don't have access to Metalink either?
I am currently employed, with MetaLink access. I've often contemplated what I might do if the situation changed (intentionally or otherwise). From what I've seen here and in real-life, I'd be far from the worst "consultant" DBA on the block (and far from the best too).
Well, I'm sure with your contacts and friends here that if you ever needed Metalink access "we" could hook you up.:p
I count on this! :DQuote:

You can purchase per incident I believe at $125 per but really how do you have a production implementation of Oracle without a license and the support contract that accompanies it
exactly!
I propose that when a member requests help, we point them to Metalink. If they say that they don't have access to it there should be a default thread telling them how to achieve getting access and do not help them further. I think this will deter a lot of "stupid" and pointless thread creations.
Thoughts?
First I think that you are overly optimistic concerning people who ask dumb questions, second those are the questions that are most entertaining. :DQuote:

I agree that "sometimes" they are entertaining. It gives me an excuse to make fun of someone so that they'll hopefully think twice before they post again. kinda like an OCP saying you can't change a database name, that stuff kills me
But, still IMO there should be a thread somewhere that points these lazy, ignorant people on how they can solve thier problem. Please don't get me wrong, I am all for helping people out who've banged thier head against the wall and can't find the answers. vent vent vent
those guys are sooo funny, more time reading the manual and less time thinking of what to put in a sig :DQuote:

does anyone think there are people trying to support unlicensed oracle installs? :o
Surely with the amount of money that most freelancers earn they can afford to purchase their own license :D
Anyway why would you want to use Metalink when you get better quality information here :p At least you get a response to threads here (maybe not always the response you want)
So does that mean I can get away with answering a "less than intelligent" question with a "less than intelligent" answer without getting my pee pee smacked for it? :DQuote:

. . . and if that response is a link to MetaLink? ;)Quote:

Hee hee another good call Dapi!
For some reason I can see this thread getting moved but I really wish it wouldn't so everyone would take the time to read this discussion. If one person would "wake up" and realize that if you're a DBA working for a company you CAN get access to Metalink my point would be proven.
