if you are Oracle DBA, what will be your next learning track?

suppose you are an OCP DBA. after this what will be your learning track & why?

well if we talk about paper OCP DBAs then unfortunately it's like a student graduated from school

learn? I am learning everyday, not focusing myself to a path rather to job/industry/customer needs

what would be your learning track if you graduate from physics? now days I see many physicist programming, may be IT is the learning track?

While, personally, i think, since becoming a Oracle DBA,try to learn more on Oracle Technology, on all area of Oracle.

Definately, as we guys know, most of the Oracle DB run on Unix boxes.There's one area we can look into it.

Probably try to learn how to create a CV which can get me an interview for something other than certified potato picker ;) (sorry, reference to previous thread).

May also try to get some knowledge of UDB since this is a primary competitor and most of my pre-Oracle experience is DB2. Also, since I'm on the 8i track, 9i new features would be a pre-requisite. But I'm dammed if I'm going to do anymore certs unless someone (employer) pays for 'em.

Minhaz,

What do above responses say ? Its personal preference cuz, each replied specific to their personality. DO what interest you most and make yourself do best in your day to day.

If I get that Q, I will be concentrating on Primary OS (UNix flavors) on which Oracle runs, After all you need to know your OS better to make sure your Database is running with Optimum performance. I don't feel like running towards Unix Admin every time I have some issues on OS.

I am planning on getting my Ph.D. in the migration patterns of the Orange Breasted Clay Pigeon.

Not saying that this is for everyone, but the hottest technologies to learn now (which compliment Oracle very well) are:

XML
Java
Web Services (Some XML and Java are prerequisites for Web Services)

Easy Ed

Hmmm... this is an interesting topic. I've been wondering what other technologies to try and get into in the future as well... and Since Nick has the COBOL and Patato Picking market monopoly, I'm going to have to think of something else.

I'm hoping (when) I pick up a new role in London, I'll be dealing with some new technologies, what that'll be I don't know. I would be interested in doing something with Peoplesoft or Oracle 11i or something... maybe some other DB technology, DB2 (or the other Nick Mentioned) and even SQL Server, just out of interest.

I was thinking about going on and Oracle Spatial course... but I've told my employer I'm leaving for the Motherland, so I don't think they'd be too keen to pay for it....

However I am not sure what ERP is good, SAP is like crap0la as well, untunable.
I remember couple of months back was in a customer, their have SAP R/3 and one day the CTO wasnt happy with one of batch processes which took too long, my company sent 4 SAP consultants trying to optimize the process, since they are SAPPERs they only know how to deal at SAP level, they spent 2 weeks and couldnt speedup the process, one of my collegues created an index in one of the tables and process ran in 2 minutes when it normally takes 6 hours, the CTO was so mad at these expensive SAP consultants :D

Which Learning track? Easy....

In light of Pando's last reply prehaps the best career path is a Oracle-SAP Hybrid of some description, although that sounds quite scary to me and probably a sin against nature :D

The result of this thread is that this is a pointless discussion. Where you go next depends on your environment and what you hope to accomplish.

Plumbing and house cleaning have good money in it...

Seriously, these are the areas I think are currently hot:

Java and Websphere

XML and ColdFusion

.net

If you area diehard oracle fan, switch to App DBA/11i development. They seem to have more potetial than database dba/developer..

I think I'm gonna become a Yoga teacher and specialise in advanced flexibility for models and film stars. I'm not sure if it will pay well but I'm sure I'll enjoy it more than reading through statspack reports... probably.

This thread is beginning to get very strange, can somebody explain what being naked has to with which career path someone should choose. I can hosnestly say that in my 7 years of Oracle I've never once had to be naked to perform my tasks :D

How many years of experience you have in Oracle? How deep have you dwelled into Oracle to understand the way it works. Its a 'maddening' world.. Oracle deep down is quite philosophical.. that's what a "Mad" world is meant in the context I explained. Now its getting serious over-shadowing the humor I expected:)

Khm, during my quite long Oracle career I had to perform some of my tasks naked, I must admit.

None of those tasks were closely related to Oracle, though.... :o :p
