Hi there,
Just wondering how much it would cost to get to OCM?
I know that one with OCP9i would have to take 2 advance courses from Oracle and do a 2 day OCM Practical exam.
For those who are already OCM, how much does the practical exam and the 2 advance courses cost.
Is the practical exam really difficult for someone who has experience installing and configuring Oracle & OEM on Linux?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure you'll find anyone in the world that could give you a hands-on experiences of the practicum exam for Oracle Master, because AFAIK that exam is not available yet.
If I'm not mistaken all current OCMs has been given this title as an "honorary" Oracle Certified Masters.
I notice Julian has Oracle Masters as part of his signature - perhaps you can throw some light on this questio Julian?

I just discovered that Oracle University is conducting the Oracle Certified Masters practicum which cost $2000 in the States!... and on top of that we have to be OCP 9i certified 1st, then pay for 2 advance courses conducted by Oracle University.
Perphaps this is how Oracle plan to bring up their share price in the market!!
Its simply ridiculous to pay US$2000 for the 2 day practical exam.
I think now...I shall give OCM a miss!
Anyway, hope Julian or Tim can comment on this OCM.

I was really into the idea of doing the OCM but I can't justify the cost. If I worked for a company that would pay for it I'd think about it again.
The cost of the practical doesn't surprise me that much since it sounds like it's gonna be quite intensive. What really offends me is the mandatory courses. I'm sure there are lots of people who would learn nothing, or little, from these courses.
At least there aren't going to be loads of paper OCMS.
I think Julian's former company funded the whole OCM program by sending him on 1 million training courses. I'd be surprised if anyone at Oracle has been on more courses than him :)

:-) In fact, I think I have been to probably all Oracle ILT courses. There are some related to UML I have not visited but after attendng the 5 day Java course at Oracle I decided not to continue with Java related courses. I have not been to the RMAN course, advanced replication and partitioning but they are organized like once a year in Europe.Quote:

does it really test your knowledge? Or can it be passed without being a guru?
So what's an Oracle guru? Someone who knows everything about Oracle? There is no such person. One who knows 50% about Oracle? That's an old-fashioned word: guru. Word from the 90s. Then software was simple and people could sort of learn all about a product. Not any more. Not with Oracle.Quote:

I passed the OCP exams and I can't even spell Orakle :)

What do you mean by that? AFAIK there will only be one testing center in Europe (EMEA region), and that is planned to be in England (Reading, I assume). And AFAIK it has not been put into operation yet.Quote:

there is this guy from Oracle named Peter Sharman who took OCM exams in US and shared his experience in newgroups, comp.databases.oracle.server. He described a bit the exam, he said it was hard (I think he is pretty good, he wrote 2 books if I rememebr right, or was Daniel Morgan I cant remember), he passed it but was hard. The good news is you can take Oracle doco to the exam (which is practical not written) so at least you dont have to remember every single steps to setup a standby database for example but since it's practicalyou need experience because you may be see dodgy ORA-XXX errors hehe
And the exam runs on RedHat advanced server so you need at least some basic linux/unix knowledge

But If I may ask a little bit, it must have been quite a struggle to convince them from not to choose for SQLServer since they did a lot of investment in you(and others I guess) and in oracle DB (and development as well).
I mean all the migration etc and deployment must also need a lot of investment(Train people, etc)
Don't misunderstand me here as I know I too get tempted to "Run down my current employer" when I'm sitting in the interview room. I mean as a technologist,If you will, you might have some vital technical issues that you'd want to get across the managements heads rather than a price tag.
But whatever , I guess you're nicely settled with the Nokia people.

They had to install a lot of reporting software which was available only for SQL-Server, and there was no way programmers could do that with PL/SQL, Reports within a short period of time. Nothing to do with the database, except probably the savings from the OPS licences.Quote:

If they simply decided to switch to SQL Server simply because of some reporting software (????!!!!????), it looks like they have previously run OPS just because it sounded fancy ("Hey, we use OPS!"). Obviously there was no bussiness need to run OPS at all. Or am I missing something?

My mother-in-law has ,coincidentally, just been there.And BTW it's a word of advise as a tourist. Every country has it's own regulations but I've travelled a lot(I've also been to egypt several times BTW)and you must respect that(regulations, I mean).

I agree with you about having to respect other countries' regulations, but i still think that it's ok to have such a mobile in Egypt (unless you're trying to take picutres of others' butts) ;)
