Moderators are abusing their power

Hi friends,
I don't know what you guys think but I find that Moderator in here (you know who you are) is quite annoying. I mean you can't go and close thread based on your own opinion. I find some threads in here are quite useful and all of a sudden a moderator closes it. A good example is the discussion of which is the good book for P&T exam. Well, i know this question has been asked before but as a new comer one may not know there is a search function that let you search for old stuffs. After all, we all come here to learn and if you're annoyed by this then don't be a moderator. Secondly, moderator also edits the content of the postings, c'mon guys respect individual rights. This is not a communist country after all. If you argue that the reason you close the thread is because it contains "illegal" materials. Well, let me tell you something, I can show you many other "open" threads that contain similar information. I hope this is a constructive feedback.

Threads get closed (by certain individuals, I know who I am) only for one of two reasons.

First, if the thread mentions buying/selling/trading of commercial study materials from a third party, it gets closed. This includes STS software, NetG software, Oracle ILT books, etc.

Second, if a thread starts one of these "Me Too" type discussions where people want something sent to them, it will get closed.

I typically don't close a thread if it is offending to one person or another. That's not my beef, I could care less.

yeah, i ned sts to studie 4 my exams. i cant ufford to by sts 'cuz i work at mcdonalds during the day and ned to studie at nite. who does this a---ole think he is anyway?

I think Jeff is doing a good job as Moderator ... for what I have seen threads only get locked for the stated reasons, which is the way it should be.

Jeff, I respect you as the moderator and your DBA knowledge, and I don't have a problem if you following your "2 rules" but I see some other posts, which was closed by moderator, that your 2 rules may NOT be applicable for example this one:

I was gonna post a recommendation for one of the books I've used to pass Oracle exams but somehow you decided to close it or this post:

I didn't see (never had the chance) the whole content of this message but if you could care less why did you edit them. If you think the post violates your "rules" then just close it don't erase/modify the content of the message. The information may not be useful to you but it could be useful to many other newbies.

I closed the thread because there were several "send me the stuff you studied with" and "me too" and "I have this stuff for sale..." replys to the thread. I closed the thread and then deleted the inappropriate messages. If that's abuse of the moderator privilege, then screw it, let these people peddle the illegal software on this forum and let STS sue internet.com and take the whole site down.

Jeff,

I think your doing a good job. well, except for editing the post of other members, coz i personally feel it's unethical and i think closing the thread alone is enough.

i know that being a moderator is a diffucult job. And you can't make everyone happy. But you have so far made this forum worth visiting. and you did a good job by not allowing this site to be a place for illegal software trade and stuff.

Well, as i've said earlier, i've no problem with the 2 rules you(Jeff) stated as long as it gets done fairly. There are endless of ways you can use you to defend what you did and there are numerous examples of posting that I can show to counter your comments. However, to be fair, we all appreciate your effort of keeping this forums online and useful to many newbies, including myself. I rest my case here.

PS: There are enuff "illegal" stuffs in this forum that both Oracle and/or STS could legally take internet.com to court to straight things out ...would they pursue this path... I don't think so...

BTW What Jeff got rid of the posts by editing the posts is just the stuffs like

"Gime this Gime That and My Mail this"

So this is GOOD

The thing is when one starts to say give me this then a bunch follows in the same thread so the only way to stop that is by closing the thread

ALL the threads Jeff closed had comments stated above (gime this plz) so what is wrong with that? Or comments like

"I have over 5GB of Software and OCP materials for sale"

Gees if I want to post that I have about 15GB of stuffs to sell!

The forum is meant for people to discuss about the certifications and exams but when one starts to say I used all this and all that for his study then a bunch says: MAIL ME ALL THOSE FREE. What have you thought? That other people buy the stuffs and give them away for free afterwards? Come one give me a break at least ask with some education not like this folk who posted in

This is a technical discussion forum NOT a marketplace, there are much better marketplaces than this forum so folks go and try those websites and NOT here!

If some one wants to sell any thing please go to e-bay or some other site and leave this forum for technical discussions only.

Let's continue to work together and help each. This is a great forum for technical discussion! I learn a lot here from people that i may never even personally meet in this lifetime.

Thanks for all your help in this forum. Let's close this thread now and please ignore all of the comments by those who are not appreciated to have something like this site. You really have no time to argue or defense yourself. You have done a great job; moreover, your knowledge about Oracle is awesome. So please close this thread now and move on it's getting long again.

Is it necessary for moderators to modify the content within a thread before
they close it??...(of course there is a legal concern here)

sure. several of my buds say that ocp is ticket to big bux and good way to break in computer field. they say ocp dbas start at 100k and up. i cant wait to give up my mcburger job and start making some real $$$$

The way the global economy is going, gone are the days that just by getting a Certification/Tafe Diploma you get the big bucks. More and more people are struggling to find work now in the sector....imagine how many EXPERINCED people are looking for work, against all the people with just Certification. It's just not that easy anymore. Even people with Degrees are finding it difficult to find entry level positions...

That's my 2 cents.. no change need thanks.

I dont think we should allow this, this Forum is a great place for technical discussion. i really dont wanna see this FORUM reduce to place for selling and trading.

Jeff I think you should close theses threads immediately or probably delete the thread.

I do not see any problem if I sell my CDs to others.

STS hereby grants to you a nonexclusive, nontransferable, nonassignable, limited right to use one copy of the enclosed Software in object code form only on a single terminal connected to a single computer and only for your individual, personal, non-commercial use. SHARING THIS SOFTWARE WITH OTHERS OR ALLOWING OTHERS TO VIEW THE CONTENTS OF THIS SOFTWARE IS A VIOLATION OF THIS LICENSE.

The software license agreement does NOT say it should NOT be sold to others.

The CD's are not yours to sell. When you buy software, you by a license to use the software. What, exactly, do you think "nontransferable" means?

Why close this thread ?

I don't know why everyone is asking for this thread to be closed. You can't use the excuse 'there are other subjects that we should be discussing'. If this is the case then open another thread.

I think that it is good feedback for the moderators on how this sight is being run. Constructive crticism can only improve this site. I would like to point out that I have no problems with the way moderators are controling this site, but others may which should be taken into consideration.

Besides the posts by OCPwannabe have made my day, I nearly fell off my chair laughing after reading them.. with guys like him around at least we can be sure that our jobs will be safe.
