You need oracle personal for 98 and not 8.1.6 EE. If you have installed personal, then go to the settings ->> control pannel -->> services and start the oracle services and the listener.
Sam
Did the install create a database on the machine? DO you see the database files created in the $ORACLE_HOME/database directory?
Chintz
When I go to Control Pannel I don't find Services.
From Where can I start services???????
Guide me...
Thanks
What is the database version that you were trying to install on 98.
8i Personal
8i EE
8i STD
Sam
Hi
Oracle 8i Personal Edition
Release 2 (8.1.6)
foe Microsoft Windows 98
Thanks
click on:
Start, then
Programs
Then look for anything Oracle. On my machine (Win98, Oracle Personal 8.1.6), It's called "Oracle - database_home". Just look under anything that says Oracle until you find:
Database administration, then
Start Database
Don't worry about services. That's for NT.
Once the database is started, connect by starting SQL*PLUS, and specifying one of the default names/pwd, such as:
system/manager
sys/change_on_install
internal/oracle
If you need more help, post here.
If you decide to log in using a host string (the third line on the SQL*PLUS login dialog box, you'll need to start your listener first. As long as you went through the net8 configuration during installation (you probably did whether you know it or not), all you'll need to do to start your listener is:
click:
Start, then
Run
At the run prompt, type:
lsnrctl start
and click OK.

Hi Kmesser
I am getting the error
Cannot open parameter file initabc.ora
Please help me
Thanks
I suspect your installation is incomplete. What happened during the install? Any errors or unplanned reboots? Did you reboot since installing?
You may know that the directory where you install Oracle is called your ORACLE_HOME. Look in:
ORACLE_HOME\admin\dbname\pfile\init.ora
For example, my Oracle_home is C:\ORADB, and my database SID (name, more or less) is kmessdev. Thus, my init.ora is found at:
C:\oradb\admin\kmessdev\pfile\init.ora
What's in it?
Here's mine:
http://home.columbus.rr.com/internetweb/oracle/init.ora
I'll check back . . .
Hi kmesser
While creating the DataBase, from CD, last step when it
is creating the database I guess my computer hangs, I guess
so, It was showing 4% complete, and then half hour no
progress on the bar, So I shutdown the computer.
My machine configuration is 64mb RAM
500MHZ, 10.2 GB Harddisk
If you got to that point, then the Oracle software is installed, and the remaining task is to actually create a database (which is totally separate from the software installation).
Start by finding that Oracle database menu item on you start menu under programs. Look under database administration, and find:
Database Configuration Assistant
Select the Delete a Database radio button, and proceed to delete this database. You'll get a couple warnings, depending on how much of the DB was installed, but accept whatever you have to, to complete the deletion.
Once that's done, close the Assistant.
Reboot
Start the Database Configuration Assistant, and this time select the "Create a Database" radio button.
Follow the instructions. I have found that the computer will sometimes hang while a dos window is open.
Try setting your MS-DOS prompt properties before running the install. Go to:
Start, then
Programs, then
RIGHT CLICK on MS-DOS Prompt.
Go to the "Program" tab
at the Run option, select "Minimized" from the drop down list
check the "Close on Exit" box.
Run the install again.
My next door neighbor just called - his PC is dead. I'll be gone ~ an hour (hopefully). I'll check back then. I've given you about that much to do anyway. Good luck. See ya in a little while!
I'm back
Hi
I did the same thing what you have mention. I am getting error
General failure reading device LP!!?
Abort, Retry, Fail?
I am not able to delete the database through database configuration Assistance.
What next???
Try to uninstall using the Oracle Universal Installer. That will probably work.
If not:
OK. We're definitely approaching danger here.
IF THIS WERE MY OWN PERSONAL COMPUTER, AND I HAD ALL MY IMPORTANT STUFF BACKED UP . . .
I would edit my registry to remove the ORACLE key, and delete the directory I installed into and start over. If you have anything you can't live without on your computer, stop now and figure something else out. Otherwise . . .
Things you should find before you start:
Windows CD
Software CDs
Windows Boot Disk
Bible (OK, it's not that bad . . .)
1. Make a boot disk (go into control panel, add/remove programs/startup disk)
2. Click on Start, Run and type regedit.
3. Click on File, Export the Registry, and do the export.
4. Double-Click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder icon
5. Double-Click on the Software folder icon
6. RIGHT Click ONCE on the ORACLE folder, then select delete.
7. In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, and delete the Oracle Database entries.
REBOOT
Check out your machine. Most likely, you'll experience no problems at all from this. However, it's best to play around a little before doing any more installs.
Reinstall.
Good luck.
Let me know if you can't use the installer.
hi
your database installation is not copmlete taht is the starter databse is not installed.its better taht you manually create the database.
hrishy/rekha,
The problem is that Pesonal Oracle 8i is buggy to install on Win98, and the DB config. Asst. will not properly create or delete DB without errors. Also, it will not create another DB without the first one being deleted. In addition, manual creation of a DB will periodically lock the machine also. I think the entire thing is kinda slapped together.
That's why I suggested such radical treatment of what really should be a minor problem . . .
Good Luck
Hi kmesser
How to backup Important Stuff. I don't have any other device to do Backup. Tell me on the same machine how can I backup my important stuff??
Thanks
Try running the universal installer and uninstall every thing related to oracle. Edit your registry and bounce the system, then install the oracle, for no reason think that it hung, it would take some times one to three hours to install the binary and create a database initially. So it is a slow process. Once you complete the installation use the configuration assistant to create an instance and then you would be fine.
Sam
Hi Rekha,
I have the same problem of installing into my window98 too. I think it requires
at least 96MB RAM in order to install. I have 40MB RAM. I tried to install
a few times, and it did not work. Therefore, I used only oracle 7.3. :)
I am not sure if it has to do with the minimum of RAM or not.
Iam wondering ! 8i EE needs minimum of 50 MB RAM for the instance. Is this true with even 8i PE ? I don't think so. Better create database thru script or is it gives option to save the database creation script and modify it and then run.
I have never tried 8i PE installation.
Hi
I will uninstall oracle and try to Install again.
Just one more help please tell me that is there a RAM problem? I have 64 Mb RAM (but when I checked it showing
63Mb Ram)
Oracle 8.1.6 requires more RAM or will 63mb do?
Thanks
My Machine:
PIII 800
256MB Ram
45 GB HDD w/20G free
I also have a 2nd 40GB drive, for my Linux system . . .
I still had errors, hangs, unplanned reboots, database deletions . . .
Since, I haven't played with that I don't have any clue. Does the docs say that it is enough? If so you should be fine. BTW, I had earlier played with the installation of 8.1.6 EE on Win2000 64MB Ram. It went smooth. So I beleive that it should be fine.
Proceed! :)
Sam
Make sure your uninstall is Clean and doesn't leave any traces of the current installation to prevent the problems upfront.
Try deleting the Oracle Key in the regitry(BE CAREFULL!!). Don't touch anything else except Oracle registry key.
It sholud be in /HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/
Hi Rekha,
if you have already installed oracle 8i and have problems. Try to uninstall it. Restart your computer. Go to the services and close all your other program services. Now try reinstalling it again. Or get your machine upgraded to 128mb ram i think that will work fast.
Hi rekha
RAM is not a problem.
U just remove the keys from registry and also delete the directory where u installed oracledb. then after reboot run the installer again. it will work smooth.
Just give it a try and i feel u'll do it.
After that start practising.
you have to Reinstall it with Different Oracle Home OR
Install with same home after deleting the ORAWIN from C: and ORACLE folder from Registry
Vicky
Those of you who keep telling him to adjust his services, please pay attention. He's on Windows 98.
Thanks!
hi rekha ..u need a minimum of 96 mb RAM for the installation..the oracle installed is not creating the database IF
it gets installed.
don't look for services its not there on win98..secondly..
thts correct ur registry has to be cleared for furthur installation..if got time n no vital data on comp ,reinstall win98....

1. Basic requirement for Oracle 8i Personal or Server is 96 MB RAM. U don't have that much RAM.
2. NO problem on the harddisk side because u have 10 GB. Only 2 GB is required.
Any my solutions are.
Install the Oracle 8i Personal Edition on Windows 98 by choosing TYPICAL. When the system asks for the database to create by the Database Assistant Tool, Don't create the database. By doing this you are utilizing the available memory of 64 MB to the fullest extent.
Now your installation will succeed. After that choose the DBA Assistant and leave out all the options like Jserver,Spatial etc except Advanced Replication and SQL Plus option.
Your database wud have been installed.
If you have further doubts and clarifications please mail me.

Hi Everybody
So the Problem is RAM. I have 64mb and minimum
requirement is 96 mb. Right?????
Thanks
64 MB RAM is sufficient. Nothing todo with RAM, some problem with installation, it was hung and rekha rebooted seems. Clean Uninstall and Reinstallation of s/w should take care of the problem.
Hi Rekha
RAM is not the problem. I've installed Oracle 8i Personal on Windows 98 with 64MB RAM.
So, remove the previous installation completely by deleting files and removing Oracle Key from registry and do a basic installation without creating a database. This will succeed.
Then, use Database Configuration Assistant to create the database.
During the installation, the % of install may be stranded at 4 or 9% for quite some time. Be patient, it will complete all of a sudden with 99% ..100%. This is my experience of installing Personal Oracle 8i on Win 98 win 64 MBRAM.
With best wishes.
hi..8i requires 96mb RAM...for the starter database to be created.....make sure ur registry is free from prviously installed oracle...go to registry (regedit) and find and delete the oracle enteries b'fore putting up oracle again..
Hi gogo
I've installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition on Windows 98 with 64 MB RAM and it is working fine.
I've also installed Oracle 8i Standard Edition on NT with 64 MB RAM and it works as long as u have enough virtual memory. Ofcourse, when installing it advises u against installing the starter database with less than 96 MB RAM. But I did go ahead with 64 MB RAM and it works fine.
With best wishes.
Thanks Everybody
I have installed Oracle 8.1.6 on 98 .
Thanks for your kind support.
