I have moved around a lot over the past few years as well.
Learning the tools that are relevant for the current position is most important to me. If planning to stay in the same position for a while, why not master the skills used most regularly and focus certification efforts on the same set of skills?
A new contract requiring skills with which i have no experience is a gift, especially if the customer is even remotely patient.
Regardless of what some people might tell you here, it is a fact that if you want to be an Oracle DBA, you better learn Oracle related things (PL/SQL, etc), then bothering with Sun Solaris or HP stuff. You are more valuable as an Oracle DBA if you know Oracle than if you know some Oracle stuff.Quote:

The discussion does have me thinking. I recently finished my 8i certification and now I am trying to choose between PL/SQL or Solaris certification (and the 9i upgrade of course). If you were to prioritize between those three, which order would you do them? I intend to do them all, eventually, but I would like to get the most in the short run. Thank you for your opinions.

Thanks Julian. There is a lot of information out there and it does get confusing. The work environment has become more competitive and achieving the OCP has helped me keep my job. My employer does reimburse me for the training and certification however, things are touch and go in regards to the company's survival and I need to go with what is going to help me the most in the short term.
Since the company has laid off most of the qualified DBAs I find that many questions are coming to me and there does seem to be a lot of expectation regarding PL/SQL knowledge also (triggers etc.)
I like the product quite a bit and I hope it doesn't lose its competitve edge.
See, in this case you learn Pl/SQL, what can OS knowledge help in you anyway? Learn what you need and forget about market unless you plan to change job soon?Quote:
