Hi Gayathri,
Why we need sun every day when we have Moon.
If there is no sun,What you will think. The day is no good.So you need SUN.
Hope you understand my thinking.
Every day N no of users working in databases but only one dba monitors all the
developers activities by monitoring database.Attending users issue itself requirees
more than 24 hrs in a day. After 10 days slowly one developer will come and ask,
Hi My procedure got corrupt.it has 30,000 lines(coding) and it will take another 3-4 months
to rewrite. Is it possible you bring back my codes.
Answer is YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.The DBA will help him/her by recovering from the last export. So the devolopers 4 months (salary) work DBA did it in 1hr.Guess what.?.
DBA is a Doctor expecting no patients(Database crash) every day. Also He/she has to keep the CV updated when ever the database get crashed(If dba is not having Oracle SUPPORT).
Thanks.
Thanigai.
if u are in love with oracle and u want it to explore it then u should play / do all the roles having oracle in ur work area.
programmer , analyst , database designer ,oracle dba - junior , senior Database Manager .
Then i guess reaching dba level would be a milestone.
Reaching that milestone is great feeling and one certainly tends to have this tittle kept with him for a long time .

Not the most proffesional attitude one can have but I know that in different contries work moral is different.Quote:
Few years ago, my colleague, another DBA refused to develop simple reports using Discoverer. She told the management very clearly that she was there to manage the database not developing reports.
As I said before, there comes a moment when the database is stable and there is not much to be done with it. That is the time when the DBA can do some development work.
Hi
I am DBA with nearly 2.5 years of experience. Most of the time i also double up as a System/Network admin at my work place as my company cant afford a separate Sys/Network admin...hence i strongly advise DBA's to pick up sys/newtork admin skills..
regards
Hrishy
Hi Gayatri,
Hope you got your doubts cleared about the role of a DBA.As many others have said before, the role of a DBA varies from organization to organization. But the point is,DBA's role is very critical and not as simple as it seems to be.
A lot of my friends have asked me the same questions as you did and I had had a tough time convincing them. But they realized and understood this only when they had some problem and needed me to solve the problem.
Well,I agree that many members felt offended, maybe because of the way you phrased your questions, but I personally didn't feel that way.FYI,I've been trying to answer your question right from the time you started this thread but found the time only now.
Cheers.
Rajesh.
FORTUNATELY....DBAs are only remembered when something goes wrong or if performance is slow.
I usually avoid participating in any thread that even smells like some kind of "religious war". And when I saw the first couple of replies to this thread I was absolutely certain it will evolve in a true "religious war", only this time it was not one of those "my-OS-is-better-than-yours" or "my-RDBMS-is-better-than-yours", this time it was "yes-you-need-DBA-no-you-don't-need-one".Quote:

My restraining from participation in Internet religious wars does not mean I'm not enjoying reading them, though. Particullary when there are a lot of funny remarks. And if I may add, there vere not very many of them in this thread, unfortunately.... ;)
Well said Jurij. I am of the same opinion.
