I agree with tecra...Oracle is not specifying which of their courses the provides the most appropriate hands-on skills...they simply say that we should just pick any one we want. So, If someone picks the Intro to Oracle9i: SQL course...and gets some hands-on experience writing SELECT statements, creating JOINS, and knows how to CREATE a USER...does this make them an effective Oracle DBA Professional when all said and done? I would think that the Bakup and Recovery, Networking, and Performance Tuning parts of the OCP Track are where the real hands-on skills are to be learned to become an effective DBA.

Oracle University shold have instead created a mandatory "Workshop" course that focused specifically on hands-on skills of the DBA Track that was to be completed to satisfy the course requirement.

Clarification on the new requirements for Oracle9i OCA/OCP designation:

If you are not an OCP for Oracle8 or Oracle8i, AND have NOT taken at lease one Oracle9i exam as of June 15th, the new requirement means you have to take at lease one ILT course or its online equivalent.

If you are not an OCP for Oracle8 or Oracle8i, AND you have taken at lease one Oracle9i exam prior to June 15th, the new requirement means nothing to you: continue taking the remainder of the exams to earn your OCP designation.

If you are an OCP for Oracle8 or Oracle8i, all you need to do is take/pass the upgrade exam(s). At this time, there is no classroom/online requirement.

Oracle now requires (as of June 15, 2002) all newly starting OCP credential candidates to complete one hands-on course in preparation for their exams and future role as an Oracle technologist. The courses are offered at Oracle University centers around the world as well as many Oracle Authorized Education Centers and Oracle Authorized Education Partners. Courses are also now available online so that candidates can complete this requirement from their home or office should travel or time be a constraint. The select courses that can be completed to fulfill this requirement are listed below:

Oracle9i Introduction to SQL
Oracle9i Database Fundamentals I.
Oracle9i Database Fundamentals II
Oracle9i Database Performance Tuning
Oracle9i Database New Features (available to those with Oracle DBA experience on previous releases)
Introduction to Oracle: SQL and PL/SQL **
**Not yet available in Instructor-Led Online format

Note to current OCP Candidates: OCP candidates having already completed at least one exam toward earning their OCP credential before June 15, 2002 will be permitted to earn their OCP without having completed one of these hands-on courses.

hehehe relax DarthDBA it's not the end of the world, it's funny you mentioned 9/11 even though it's totally unrelated to the discussion. Serously, I think this is a win/win situation both for Oracle and DBAs, it'll be more difficult to get certified, thereby making OCP more relevant (people who aren't 100% serious of imprving their skills or being a fulltime DBA will have to think twice before getting certified) and Oracle gets a substantial profit, everybody's happy except for that poor guy who's going to pay, what? $2000? ;-).

With only Bkup & Reco remaining to finish Oracle8i...I see this as a big blow and exploitation by the likes of Oracle and Microsoft....After all this training, you might still be jobless...I know a lot of certified this and that w/o jobs (despite how good they are thoretically and practically). Where was Oracle since 911...when a lot of guys lost their jobs....it's high time we tell this companies to watch out....what has oracle done to create jobs????

How does only having only B&R to finish affect you with respect to this new requirement? You finish the 8i cert, you are now an 8i OCP, and all you have to do is take the 9i upgrade exam.

It's Oracle's job to make sure all Oracle DBA's are working? I would certainly hope not!

Your career is your own responsibility. If you're not happy doing what you're doing, find another line of work. If you're out of work, get a job. If you can't find work in your town, move. If you don't think your career is worth a $3000 investment, don't get certified. Geez...

I know a guy that was a CNE for Netware. He was so motivated to become a Unix SysAdmin the he enrolled in community college and took a Unix basics class two nights a week for 4 months. He enjoyed it so much that he used his three weeks vacation and traveled to Sun Certified training programs all over the United States. Sure, he spent about $20K (real and intangible) out of his own pocket in training, but he doubled his salary in 18 mos and loved what he was doing. Sounds like a pretty good tradeoff to me...

What the heck is going on with Oracle Corp. Nobody has any idea... Now Non-OCPs have better excuse for not getting certified. One can say I can't afford... I don't think Corporates are ready to pay around $3000 ($2000 for class + $750 for exams) to get their professionals certified. What happens if Professionals quit after they have attended the class ? Professional can continue to get OCP, Corporates $2000 investment gone with the wind...

Since everyone is telling different things and I don't understand anymore what's happening, this is my scenario:

Exams made:
Passed in 1z0-001 (SQL & PL/SQL 8i) before June 15th

Courses made in 2001:
- SQL & PL/SQL
- Architecture & Administration
- Backup & Recovery


So, I'm not OCP 8i yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

About 8i:
- I do not need any additional courses to reach OCP 8i

About 9i:

I would need to make one course since I didn't try any 9i exam. However, I already made the SQL & PL/SQL last year and because of that I just need the upgrade exam.

OR

I don't need any additional courses, since I passed 1z0-001 before June 15th, it doesn't matter any courses I've made. I just need to reach OCP 8i and then upgrade

I need one course and then the upgrade exam.


Am I right? What is correct about 9i upgrade?

Your best bet would be to contact Oracle directly or contact a specific Education Reseller to comment on your particular situation.
