My #1 priority is to automate myself out of a job (of course, AFTER answering questions on dbasupport.com). The more automated the operation of my databases are, the more valuable I am to the organization. Sure, there are some shortsighted organizations that measure your productivity by how much time you spend doing the same "busy" work every day, but my organization measures your performance by how much $$$ you can save for backoffice operations.
For example, I just spent 2 weeks developing a system that will automate tablespace storage management. If one of my datafiles starts growing and approaching it's maxsize, a process will automatically add another datafile to the tablespace. I've basically automated 1/2 of a Jr. DBA. I can then take that Jr. DBA and expand his knowlege so he can grow and concentrate on other things critical to the business.
