Well this thread is real cool.
According to me there are two DBA types.
Apps DBA : The ones who manage Oracle Financials applications including HR, Productions and Purchasing applications.
(Core) Systems DBA : The ones who perform normal DBA operations such as installations, backups, cloning, tuning etc.

I've just come out of a meeting where I was asked to give my opinion on the relative merits of Weblogic, WebSphere plus my own companies sad, inadequate, creaky piece of crap..... Whoops sorry about that.
As the "DBA" here I'm expected to manage the web application server, handle the faults from our obscure development product, write COBOL (God forgive me), PL/SQL and the usual shell scripts, understand the potential usage of all manner of web enablement languages/products. Oh, and "Can you keep an eye on that Oracle database thingy".
Now, I'm not the brightest chap on the planet so I need to keep my areas of so-called expertise to a managable level.
Having said that, I guess the DBA role is changing. Companies are in the more for less recruitment mode these days so any additional experience I gain is usually a plus at least in terms of getting an interview.
Mind you, I do agree with Greg it's all getting a little tough. The account manager just exclaimed "What, you don't know how to publish a Java bean!". I suggested I practice by "publishing" a projector up his a%$e :)

different from Work to Work or Shop to shop.
1.Operational DBAs
2.Tactical DBAs
3.Strategic DBAs
4.Senior DBAs
5.Junior DBAs
6.Application DBAs
7.System DBAs
8.Contract DBAs
9.Manager DBAs.

I think the term is undefinable, as the role is different at EVERY site. You can't write a book and put a chapter in talking about the different types of DBA's, there is NO certain tasks for each. Each site has a different interpretation, I think you'b be hard pressed finding two identical DBA positions.
