Any Reasons why Oracle is not used in Financial Industry???

Having lots of Bugs and use your customers as beta testers. This has always been microoft policy. But look where they are. They entered each and every market in a late stage and captured it, and dont say that they had the money muscle always. Microsoft only became rich after it captured the O/S market and not before that and If you look back their windows was and is still is full of Bugs.

as far as their sql server strategy goes there is no doubt that they will capture the low end of the database market very soon and the day the day their O/S becomes robust as unix they will start ruling the high end market.

Then lets see how Larry will justify the high costs of ownership of oracle......

The battle for the middle seems more important than the battle for the backend.

SQLServer vs Oracle doesn't get the marketing money that .NET vs Java is getting.

Do you think that Microsoft is really so interested in the database market?

Several comments relating to previous posts:

If SQL Server was available in UNIX flavours Oracle would be in serious trouble. Anyone who's spent any time using SQL Server couldn't fail to appreciate it's usability.

As for Oracle bugs, I guess I've just been lucky because very few have ever come my way. I don't want to sound like I'm defending them but considering Oracle is available on so many platforms it's amazing it's not more buggy!

DB2 is available for windows. Check out the IBM site for a download. The management tools suck bigtime. They're slow like OEM but with less functionality.

Oracle is less expensive than it's competitors if you need all the features. If like most people you are only using a small subset of the features it's incredibly expensive since your paying for stuff you don't need. Oracle should have a more modular pricing structure.

As open source DBs like PostgreSQL and mySQL improve the cost of all the major DBs will need to be re-evaluated. OK mySQL wouldn't know a referential integrety constraint if it smacked it in the face but it is fast and free!

There is some serious money invested in Java by Sun, Oracle, IBM. If .NET wins the battle there will be alot of red faces and some seriously poor companies prime for a buyout by Microsoft!

My attitude is learn whatever is the industry standard at the moment. You can spend your whole life worrying about this stuff. Someone once told me that COBOL was going to die out :)

As far as I know Oracle is more often used in financial companies over here (in Europe) as Sybase, specialy when the amount of data becomes bigger.

Seems to me that I remember the NASDAQ's CIO speaking at an EMC/CISCO/Oracle (ECO Structure) meeting... wonder what happend to ECO Structure?

We were just audited by Oracle .. sure seemed to me like they were out trying to rustle up some bidness.

Thats just one side of the Story.... Oracle's Side.

Same kind of Success stories are there on IBM's and sybase's site.

The question is not whether Oracle is the leader or not. No doubt it is the leader. But for how long is the big question.

I totally agree with you Ron... It's just a matter of time before they arrogantly self-destruct, like IBM or Lotus did in the late 80's.

UNLESS ... they drastically change soon.

Why Oracle is not used financial companies?
