Primary Database Setting - Standby Database

Read the following Standby Database Manual:

And also read about the DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT parameters in Reference manual.

You'll find out that having both primary and standby on the same hoset is totaly valid and doable. As a matter of fact, I have such a configuration right now on my laptop. Obviously not for disaster recovery purposes, though :D.

oh.. Can you open both the primary and standby databases at the same time?? Dont you get "can not open the database in exclusive mode" kind of error?? I dont remember the exact error msg. But, we get such error msg when we try to open both the databases at the same.

And yep.. I know the concepts of standby database and db_file_convert and log_file_convert parameters.. :)

No, I don't get any error mesage, I can open both databases (standby only in read-only mode, of course). Anyway, why would Oracle try to open any of the two databases in exclusive mode?

Anyway I will try to install Oracle 9i Enterprise Edition in my machine to try this feature again. I know there are some enhancement on the Standby - such as FAL_CLIENT and FAL_SERVER.
