Actually I've found a neat alternative. Buy a 19 inch monitor, put it on high resolution and drape an attractive cloth over the right hand side of the screen. The annoying adverts are gone and it gives your monitor a warm and cosy look...
I must say, on a 19" monitor at high resolution, it's not that bad. At 1024x768 it is barely OK.
While I accept this to some degree, I believe our opinion should matter. I accept that we do not pay for this service and it exists because of funding from advertising but that is no different to many of the other forums I participate in yet the user communities opinions are still very relevant.Quote:

Revenue should never be at the expense of usability.
Just my opinion :)
hmmmm Howards site doesn't have any adverts.....Quote:

Take another look! Top and bottom. Nothing comes for free :)Quote:

If you get no people asking questions you get bad hitrates. If you get bad hitrates adverisers won't pay the money. Site makes no money so it's closed down.
Moral of this story. Don't annoy your users or you will lose your business. It's the basic rule for sites using this business model!

When you're paying for the service, then I agree. But this is not the case here.Quote:

looks shoddy and unprofessional
So you're saying you'd prefer the ads on top, and have no portion of the forum visible without scrolling? Because those ads will sometimes flex to 2 and 3 times in length, which is why they're on the side.

But when the price gets too high, I stop going to the shop.

Speaking from my own experience, I used to visit this site alot. When it first added the big banner at the top of the page I was using a smaller screen and I had to scroll nearly a whole page to see the forum contents. From that point on my usage tailed off drastically.
I have asked very few questions on this forum, but I have answered many. I have not been paid for this service. The people answering questions are the assets for this site and they are not paid to do it. Companies should think long and hard before annoying unpaid workers who are not obliged to stay.
With that said, in a week or two it will blow over. Some people will not come back and others will come for the first time.
I have noticed over the last few weeks that the forums seem generally more quiet these days. I guess the number of competing sites has increased or Oracle is really getting easy :)

Run this forum on 1024x768 and tell me what you think of this layout.Quote:

I use that very resolution all day at work. So does pretty much everyone in the company. It's great that they can sustain themselves in that fashion. I'm betting they don't have an air-conditioned roomful of servers to have to finance though.
Agreed Joe. I'm sure HJR is doing it thru his PC but if you kill the content that made this very forum popular then you're killing the content. Heck money is irrelevent(it'll become soon).
I saw that TKyte doen't have the dbasupport link either anymore. He did seem ti mention it when he was talking about the links he "liked". I still point people to this site. But the look has gotta mesh with the content, or else a newcomer will be disappointed.
From HJRs website:
"I used to host the Dizwell Forum as part of the Dizwell domain, but that merely led to disaster: the original dizwell Forum was hacked because I didn't patch the Forum software early and often enough, and I was accordingly compelled to make someone else responsible for taking backups and patching things! The all new, improved Dizwell Forum can now, therefore, be found here."
HJR's forum is now run on a free service, which makes it money by running discrete ads on the forum pages, not filling them to the point where the forum becomes redundant.
Note. I have made no mention of the hosting company or the forum URL and I have not incited people to abandon this forum. Please don't remove this post :)
Cheers
Tim...
guys its time to quit this site?
I am looking for some other decent forums already!
I like Dizwell's forum :). Quality stuff there...

I don't blame the web folks, they have to do whatever they are told but surely those promoting this site can see it's awful!
You know full well that if they removed the forum and just had adverts you would be back every day, regular as clockwork :)Quote:
