shutdown abort = instance failure and in instance failures oracle does instance recovery automatically so you loose only uncomitted data
yaeh thanks a lot pando that clears my confusion being a dba for almost 2 years its only now i realised that shutdown abort si only instance failure .tahnks a lot for your info.but one last question does this mean that a
"media recovery may never be required" if i do a shut down abort.
never unless your instance failure is caused by a power cut and your disk fries :D
