No more work would be needed to just use the raw device name. Just would need to do a database file rename if the raw device is relocated. instead of having to do recreate of the softlink. IMHO, this is better...

Possibly, i'm only going on what our sys admin says. Thats probably where it all started to go wrong :)


We prefer it this way. Regardless of what disk group the file resides, the database sees it as in the same directory as all the other database files. We move around datafiles quite a bit when spreading I/O... of course when we move to 10g\ASM, this won't be an issue anymore :)
