The REAL reason that "morality" won the day was because BIG BUSINESS was behind it. Hemp paper and hemp bio-fuels were being developed, and the timber & oil companies seized the moral argument to stamp out competition.
BTW, I believe the drafts of the US Constitution were written on hemp paper before the final version was inscribed on vellum.

Hey Hanky, I know NPR isn't normally to your taste, but there was a really good interview with Tommy Chong on Fresh Air, much of it about his recent conviction for selling drug paraphanalia (sp?) -- no transcript as far as i can see, but an audio stream is available ("You mean we're smoking dog sh*t man?!"). Here's the gist : You'd need an extremely high tax rate to cut qnty of drugs bought to the current prevailing level with a prohibition. Also, dealers and consumers will try to evade this mega tax. Penalties for tax evasion are not as severe as current drug prohibition laws..neither are they as effectively policed. You get the drift..

If c0ke were legal and cheap, demand would spike. I'm sure parents wouldn't be thrilled at the prospect of their 12yr old smoking c0ke at school.
Obviously they wouldn't be -- but do you reckon that it'd be easier for kids to get hold of drugs when it's legalised than it currently is, though? I'd not be too sure. I don't think it's very difficult right now.Quote:
