I can't agree with that. Your OS no need to be in Japanese. The key point is NLS_LANG setting in your client and your client PC should be able to show Japanese character. I implement quite few this kind of databases for China and Japan users. My OS is pure English, character set of databse is UTF8.Quote:

My NLS_LANG setting is Japanese_Japan.UTF8.I am working on Server,that is its NLS_LANG.then can u elaborate how i can insert and later reterieve Japanese data using English OS.Any kind of suggestion will be great help to me.

My DB is running on UNIX server that is pure English OS without any ability to display Chinese or Japanese character. If I retrieve Japanese character data from server side,it will show as ???. My database character set is AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. This database is used to store English as well as multi-byte Asian Characters, like Chinese, Japanese,etc.
Users receive/display data on client machines through applications, sqlplus and other tools. For our Japan users, they need to set NLS_LANG=Japanese_Japan.JA16SJIS.Please note, their client machines/PCs are Japanese character support/enabled, which means their PCs know how to display and input Japanese character. This can
be done by installing some Japanese software, e.g. Japanese Windows. You also need to install some Japanese font to display Japanese language.
Your case is almost the same as my home PC. My home PC is English OS with database created with UTF8. I can store/retrieve Chinese character because I have some software installed to support Chinese character. I also need to set NLS_LANG to ZHS16GBK before I invoke sqlplus. In your case, you only need make sure it can hanlde Japanese character and set NLS_LANG=Japanese_Japan.JA16SJIS before run any application or sqlplus.
To check whether you have NLS_LANG set after invoking SQLPLUS, you can do:
C:\>set NLS_LANG=Japanese_Japan.JA16SJIS
C:\>sqlplus test/test@icare2
SQL*Plus: Release 10.1.0.2.0 - Production on û╪ 9îÄ 9 14:29:39 2004

Hi,
You can select both japanese and english in the regional setting, after doing this you can see both the character set without using japanese OS and you must have MS Mincho fonts installed in your machine this will installed by your machine automatically.
