RMAN WRITING TO RAW DISK?

Ok, then here is a very exact question for you, please be very specific in your answer:

Can you explain why RMAN has no problems in performing a cold backup where the destination of the backup set is raw device, while it is impossible for RMAN to perform hot backup with raw as the destination.

I provided my explanation, which you claim to be incorrect, so I'm currious to here your explanation. And once again to avoid further confusion, when I said "with raw devices RMAN has to know in advance the exact size of the backup" it was very clear that I was talking about raw device as the *destination* of the backup.

You're right. I tried this stuff. I am a bit doubtful about the sizes of the file when copying (whether it returns an error or not when the file size is changed during copying or whether it will not give an error and copy the file without the latest change).
But it certainly does not copy the files generated after the backup was issued.

It is you who claims that RMAN can perform cold backups to RAW partitions. I have never tried that. Have you? All I know is that in Metalink DocID 99382.996 and subject 'RMAN Cold Backups : Filesystems and Raw Devices' an Oracle expert claims: "RMAN will not backup TO raw devices." Now, if you have performed such backups, I will take your word for it, if not, would you be so kind as to provide an URL which supports your claim.
