i would like to know the steps on how to go about installing a standby database on the same machine as the primary database .i am doing this for experimental purpose .could anybody elaborate the steps to do this .curently running oracle 8.1.6 on linux 6.2

Since this is one whole chapter of discussion on how to set it up, I would suggest that you go through the documentation and post questions in specific. this is just a suggestion considering the amount of explanation that it would require.
