ERD tool that can reverse engineer using Levels of Foreign Keys away from root table
Reverse engineering a 10 year old datamodel with 600 tables results in a messy circuit diagram.
What I really need is to choose a source table central to the main themes such as ORDER_LINE_ITEM and then have the ERD tool pull in tables to the diagram that are 1,2,3 foreign key relations away.
I once used a tool that would let me 'throttle' the size of tables involved like this but it was for MS_SQL.
Does such a tool exist ?
ER/Studio seemed to have that 'LEVEL' facility for child or parent Fkey releated entities in a Subdatamodel but it never actually added them in automatically.
SQL Developer from Oracle is like the sqlplus command history with a depth of '1'. You can auto pull in children or parents but only one ring or level away from the table your working with.
Thanks

Have you tried Visio?
Also ER-Win does it

Erwin works well. You might also look at SQL Developer. 600 tables is a lot.
You are better off grouping the schema into sets of tables.

Right. This is why it is important to be able to select a table such as CUSTOMER or ORDER_LINE_ITEM and then ask it to create a sub-model automatically by finding all tables N-foreign keys away. I think 2-3 FKEYs away would be useful.
I downloaded and am currently reverse engineering the 600 table schema but I do not expect the result to be very useful and am not sure how to get ERwin do this 'ERD reverse engineer throttling'.

I have obtained the trial key and installed ERwin. It locked up reverse engineer. I did not see a way to limit the tables. I also did not see a way to just connect to the database and 'cherry pick' a single table onto a diagram and the request all related tables within N-Fkeys be automatically added. This way I could provide several diagrams of key areas central to the theme.
Any tips on how this N-Relations reverse engineer can be triggered would be appreciated. I excluded everything but tables in one schema and it appears to have locked up again.

Look harder, after you select the target you can certainly include/exclude objects.
