Sorry, I thought you meant for a website, where people type in their details. I didn't know you meant for people actually swiping cards through a reader.
I've never done this before and I have no clue how it works.
In the UK, we have a thing called "Chip & PIN" now, so you don't sign the slip anymore, you type in a PIN in a hand held unit to identify you are the owner of the card. It was a shock when I was in the USA and I was asked to sign slips again. Anyway, the reason for this aside is that retailers get the "Chip & PIN" units which do everything for them. I don't know how the transactions are handled, but judging by the small retailers that use them, I would suggest that this is all handled for them.
I don't know how this works in other countries.
