512Mb of physical memeory is really small for Oracle.
Depends what you are doing - my test/dev has four instances on a machine with 512MB, performance is limited mainly by the **** RAID-5. The SGA's are 50-125MB.

Naively, paging allows you to over-allocate SGA - anything not actually needed will get paged out.
