Well... my platform is:

Oracle 8.1.6 on Red Hat Linux 6.2


The ironic thing is:
$ sqlplus system/manager works for "oracle" user and NOT for other OS users
while $ sqlplus system/manager@orcl works for everyone.

The env. variables are set identical for everyone.
