    locks and fk

    I've read recently that if foreign key columns suffer lots of updates we should put a index to avoid locks (it's written that a simple update we run against a row may lock all the table causing contention). I cant understand why exatcly a index in the fk cols can avoid this 'lock all the table'. May someone explain it please?
