Thread: Copy datafiles or export?

    Question

    We have two instances on an HP9000 unix server running 8.1.6.

    TSAP is production and TSAD is development.

    At one time our DBA had me shut down both instances, copy the data files from TSAP to TSAD, rename the files, and startup the databases.

    This made an exact copy of the data in production for development use.

    Since our DBA is no longer with us, and I'm still learning, I cannot remember all the steps involved.

    Is there anything I need to do besides shutdown, copy/rename, restart?

    How does copying the datafiles compare to using import/export?
